Soft skills are the skills that help you work with people, manage yourself and respond effectively to different situations.
You may already use these skills every day without realising it: communicating with others, managing your time, solving problems, working in a team, taking the lead, handling challenges and adapting to change.
The Soft Skills Club, brought to you by PTEM Careers, is a CCA designed to develop these skills beyond the classroom. It is an extension of our career guidance services, giving you a space to explore and practise skills that will be useful in higher education, future careers and everyday life.
The club is not about sitting through lectures or memorising definitions. Instead, you will have opportunities to:
Reflect
Think about your experiences in and outside the classroom. What went well? What could you have done differently? What have you learned about yourself?
Explore
Learn about different ideas, theories and best practices related to soft skills and how they are applied in real situations.
Practise
Put what you learn into practice through discussions, activities, simulations and role-play exercises.
Learn by doing
Take part in practical challenges and activities, then learn from your own experiences and from the experiences of others.
Share & receive feedback
Discuss your ideas, give constructive feedback to others and use feedback to improve your own approach.
Activities may focus on skills such as:
Effective communication
Leadership
Teamwork
Emotional intelligence
Time management
Task prioritisation
Problem-solving
Self-awareness
Confidence and presentation
Decision-making
Adaptability
Working with others
The exact activities will vary throughout the year, depending on the interests and needs of the club members.
Soft skills are not developed simply by reading about them. They improve through practice, reflection and experience.
The Soft Skills Club gives you a low-pressure environment to try things out, make mistakes, receive feedback and improve — while building skills that you can carry with you into university, the workplace and beyond.
Come ready to participate, try something new and learn from each other.
