Japan is known for its advanced technology, beautiful clean streets and cities and extremely polite culture. Japan is fairly affordable compared to the UK, and some courses offered are taught in English, such as in the University of Nagoya.
The Japanese government offers Bruneian students scholarships to study in Japan with limited slots each year. The Japanese Government Scholarship will cover the expenses of registration, accommodation, tuition, living allowance, outpatient medical service and insurance.
The Japanese Embassy scholarship is open to both locals and permanent residents.
Please check the newspapers and the Japanese Embassy in Brunei website for when scholarship application dates are open. Historically, application for this scholarship opens any time between March to August.
Please note that applying for the Japanese Embassy scholarship is very competitive because you are required to pass a compulsory Mathematics, English and Japanese paper, and may also be required to sit for optional science papers depending on the subject that you are choosing to pursue at university. To improve your chances in passing these exams, a Mathematics teacher at PTEM is offering extra classes to our students from January to June. Please see the careers section to find out more if you are interested.
Alternatively, students could apply directly to Japan and opt to pay for the highly affordable school fees and living expenses.
