The Careers Section normally runs Personal Statement Writing Workshops from August to November each year. Please check the calendar on the Home page regularly.
A personal statement is an essay that you normally submit with your UCAS application. It should explain:
Why you want to study the course
What makes you suitable for the course
What activities you have done outside of class and how it is relevant to the course and your chosen career (or the area you wish to work in once you graduate)
The transferable skills you possess
Tips:
Research your university and course/research area. The universities will usually describe what they will teach on the course as well as describe soft skills they are looking for in their prospective students.
Use good English! Get someone to read your personal statement for you to check for errors.
Do not plagiarise! Copying another person's personal statement in whole or in part could penalise your whole application to UCAS and you could be rejected by all the universities you apply to for copying.
Personal statements take many forms depending on your personality and course. The Student Room has many good examples of personal statements.
